I got a problem. My owl squawks. OK, it is not that much of a problem in the garden, during the day, not yet a problem at night, though how goodness knows, the neighbours must be deaf is all I can say, however the problem is when we go out flying.
Last night I took the owl out for a fly and it squawked as often as a telemetry set, but so much louder. No wonder I didn't see a rabbit. How do I stop the noise? Whilst it is great as you cannot loose the owl, it will never hunt with all that racket.
Does / did your owl squawk, how did you silence the owl?

Crumble squawks loads at the moment. Shes driving me insane!!!

No idea how to stop her as I've had the problem with all my owls with them being hand reared. I tried getting crumble to feed herself from a young ge but she was too lazy until just a few weeks ago.

Sorry Mark no help lol

Yeah, its getting pretty desperate now, as every 20 seconds or so, squawk.

The barn owl, quiet as a mouse. Dunno, will have to keep thinking about it.

Jester squawks constantly at home when he is at or anything near flying weight and hoots pretty much the rest of the year. Probably the quietest time is from late July to late August as he is finished being randy and not quite ready to drop to flying weight.

he does squawk in the field a bit to begin with but eventually realises that quiet means more chance to catch something.

Oh no... no hope then. Thanks Jester for the info :) I am having to keep the Bengal in the house at night at the moment, coz his squawk will get him in trouble. yet my m8's male european is quiet, apart from the odd hoot, 1 or 3 per day ...???

only a couple hoots a day?? is he flown at all or is he at fat weight in aviary........... he might be that unusual breed of Bubo bubo silenticus but most flying owls can be quite noisy i am led to believe .............(sits and waits for the onslaught of posts from others with silent owls to prove me wrong :oops2: )

lucky i got neighbours who dont mind the noise

one side says he barely hears a thing (aviary isnt open at that side so sound gets slightly muffled i guess)

a few months after the other side moved in, the mother apologised to me for the noise the kids made in the house with their loud music and such like. (she said the noise didnt bother her as she sleeps at the front of her house.)

I admit, the Bubo bubo silenticus is at fat weight  Its quite nice to hoot at him and get a reply :)

I wondered if it was a weight thing, so I guess they never get out of it? so, a fat owl or a working owl in the house at night...

where do you keep him in the house at night? As Crumble is still young (& small) I've kept her indoors cause she loves the company. She is free in the living room all day until she becomes hyper active acround 9-9.30pm & is destroying the place & she then goes in a large dog crate (which she hates).
I dread to think of the mess & destruction a BEO causes  :-P

Yeah, the mop n bleach are grabbed before the cuppa  ( once the owl is back outside )

luckily, I only have it indoors when its a hot night and windows are left open, as it has been pouring with rain these last few nights, he can squawk as much as he likes outside.

I did cheat last night, I fed it 2 chicks and a rat, worked, well sort of, the owl was much quieter
:-D ( though he flew heavy tonight, but cake n eat it ?? One day maybe.
